January’s Mini-MIM Moments

Welcome to our new monthly blog post covering our Metigoshe In Motion (MIM) events from the month! We hope these posts will bring you inspiration for your own MIM events as well as a better understanding of what MIM does.

Without further ado, here’s what the MIM program was up to in the month of January:

Advent Retreat
Advent in January? Yes. We did. Bread of Life’s junior high story corps group joined us for their 2nd Advent retreat (originally scheduled for December…but you know how weather is up here…). This weekend MIM retreat was a blast! We learned about all the ‘before’ aspects of Jesus’ birth as well as baptism. There was a night hike with scripture readings, remembrance of baptism, a quite evening worship with a campfire, plenty of hot coco, great games (hungry hungry hippos and the hand game were favorites), great discussions, a sweet craft, and some good ol’ sledding!

Faith5 Family Day
Some families from Metigoshe Lutheran Church learned about and committed to engaging their families in growing in faith together through the practice of Faith5. Together we learned about the 5 steps of Faith5 through games, discussions, video clips, and hands on practice. Mix in a few camp songs, and we had a fantastic afternoon. Special Sunday School
Around 30 kids from pre-k to 6th grade joined us for some fun camp songs, games, crafts, and Bible learning. Many of the kids knew the camp songs well, jumping right along with the words. Some kids, though, were new to some of our camp traditions. It was fun to share the traditions, songs, and games with them, as well as see the ‘camp-pros’ kiddos share with others.
We talked about Jesus’ baptism and John the Baptist. And even made a fun interactive craft of Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist.

Jr. High Outreach Party
MIM events aren’t always done in the church. First Lutheran Church in Bottineau partnered with MIM to help fulfill a unique idea for community outreach. Together, First Lutheran and MIM reached out to the Middle Schoolers of Bottineau for some fun games and a little Jesus learning after a basketball game on a Friday night. The kids enjoyed pizza, cookies, a round of hungry hungry hippos, a quick adventure course game, and classic camp songs. God’s message of love for each person was shared with all. And prizes of gift cards were handed out thanks to Thrivent Financial for the action team funds! We are looking forward to a Sr. High party in February!

LYO Fun Night
Junior high kids in LYO at Oak Valley in Velva joined us for a chill evening of games and learning about the rhythm of life with God. We even made a little ‘garage band’ song using funny noises. It was a great night of reconnecting with our campers  Can’t wait to be back in a few weeks for our lock-in with them!

TMIR Community Meal & Fun
Sharing a meal with one another is a great way to share God’s love and build community. Our monthly excursion to East Housing in Dunseith included a meal of chili and chips this time. We also played some games, heard a Bible story, and crafted with beads. It’s always great to see these kids each month!
A special thank you goes out to the housing and security people of the community – they helped set us up in their new community building area.
