Mini-MIMoments: October 2016

Another fall has come and gone.  September was our month of prep work and small events within the community.  Then, October was full blast for MIM events as well as conferences and gatherings.  Thus, we are finally writing up our mini-MIMoments for October.

Bread of Life Lutheran in Minot does a church-wide Sunday School once a month called “Better Together.”  We were honored to spend their very first one with them.  We had a great time learning about how to treasure each other with 16 families.  There were jelly bean treasure hunts, bible story fun, and lovely cross medals (think Olympic medals, but in the shape of a cross).

Social Media and Youflc-socialmedia-1square

What does social media have to do with our faith? In late October, we had an inter-generational event at First Lutheran Church in Minot. People of different generations gathered and taught each other how to use different social media sites and how social media can be beneficial or detrimental, but most importantly we learned that we should “share” the good news of Jesus Christ. We also played a board game based on Facebook that was created by a graphic designer who wanted to teach us the importance of real-life social networks and relationships.

One of the best ideas for using MIM is also a great outreach program and support for local communities.  We call it an Early Out Hangout.  Students in grades K-6 at Rugby’s elementary schools had a scheduled early out, so First Lutheran partnered with MIM to provide a fun place for the kids to hang out in the afternoon.  We had 52 kids attend!  We were pretty tired after all the fun games, bible stories, skits, songs, and crafts, but it was well worth it.  Some of the kids had attended our day camps there in the past, but a few of them were new to camp (and to church).  And the parent’s didn’t need to worry about finding a sitter or taking off work early.  Overall, it was a great event.  We’ll be doing three more of these events in Rugby, and hope to do some more of these at other churches!
