This Little Light of Mine…I’m Gonna Let it Shine!

“This Little Light of Mine” is more than just a song—it’s a powerful reminder of the light Jesus gives us to share with the world. At camp, this message comes alive every week during our Christ Hike, a walking passion play where we journey alongside Jesus through His last days. We follow Jesus from the holy waters where John the Baptist baptizes Him to His final breaths on the cross. For campers, this experience brings faith to life. They don’t just hear about Jesus’ story; they witness it. They see with their own eyes the depth of Jesus’ love and sacrifice.

This sacred time at camp is full of unexpected “God Moments.” From the haunting echoes of “Were you there when they crucified my Lord” to the powerful resurrection celebration at the campfire with hundreds of voices proclaiming “He, He, He is Alive,” the presence of God is undeniable. It’s a transformative experience that moves campers to the core, making the story of Jesus not just something they’ve heard but something they’ve felt deeply.

This past summer, I was reminded of the Christ Hike’s impact through Pastor Rachael’s story. She brought a group of youth to camp, including one boy who had never heard the story of Jesus’ last days. The morning after the Christ Hike, she asked him if he knew the story, and he simply replied, “No.” In that moment, she realized the profound opportunity camp provides: a chance for kids to witness the story of Jesus in a way they never have before. She told me, “What a cool opportunity for kids to be able to witness the story of Jesus’ last days right here at Bible Camp. A place where campers can feel like they belong and have a community to dig into their faith with. What a powerful and important place.”

Reflecting on Rachael’s story, I think of countless campers I’ve sat with as they processed all the emotions of witnessing Jesus’ final days. From anger and heartbreak to gratitude and empowerment, they walk away forever changed, knowing that Jesus died so they could shine their lights brightly.

At camp, everyone has a light to shine. Whether it’s braving the cold at Polar Bear swim, feeling the team comradery during an All Camp Game, or sharing giggles late at night in their bunks, we see firsthand how light spreads from one heart to another. Amidst the fun and fellowship, God’s presence is constant, showing up in the laughter around the campfire, the heartfelt prayers before bed, and the deep conversations sparked by curiosity and wonder. It’s in these sacred moments that the light of Jesus shines the brightest.

This little light of mine… I’m gonna let it shine! I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be a part of sharing the story of Jesus and to help each camper discover the light within them. As we look forward to more unforgettable experiences, I invite you to join us in prayer and support for each camper who steps onto these sacred grounds.

Thank you for being a part of this journey, for believing in the power of camp, and for helping us shine His light brightly.
